Buzzard Leadership DC Trip
by: Abby Hickman ’27
Over fall break, the James Buzzard Leadership cohort traveled to Washington, D.C. for a two-day leadership experience filled with meaningful discussions, professional networking, and valuable lessons on what it truly means to lead.
I applied to the James Buzzard Leadership Development Program because it offers a unique opportunity to strengthen my leadership abilities while connecting with professionals from a range of industries. As I work toward advancing into management positions within the pulp and paper industry, I see the importance of developing skills such as decision-making, effective communication, and team motivation. The program’s mentorship, workshops, and exposure to different leadership styles provide the foundation to help me grow both personally and professionally.

During our time in D.C., we met with leaders across various industries. Our visits included the British Embassy, the National Academy of Sciences, George Washington University, and the National Alliance of Forest Owners (NAFO). Each discussion provided valuable insight into leadership from a different perspective, whether in global policy, science communication, athletics, or natural resource management. Despite the variety of topics, many of the leadership themes we heard were consistent across all panels.
One of the main lessons that stood out throughout the trip was the importance of building authentic relationships. Every speaker emphasized that genuine connections are key to effective leadership, whether in politics, business, or academia. Another major takeaway was the responsibility leaders have to support and empower their teams, especially those with less power or visibility. This idea reinforced how crucial empathy and understanding are when leading others.
Finally, the concept of being a lifelong learner was a common theme. In today’s fast-changing world, strong leaders must continue to learn, adapt, and remain open to new ideas and perspectives.
Overall, the trip highlighted that leadership is a dynamic skill that extends beyond technical knowledge. Successful leaders can navigate complex challenges by building trust, communicating effectively, and remaining adaptable under pressure. The ability to find common ground, approach problems with curiosity, and lead with integrity stood out as consistent traits across every conversation we had. These lessons will serve as valuable guidance as I continue to develop as a leader in both my academic and professional journey.
