From May 18-21, 2026, Extension Specialist Dr. Frederik Laleicke with Wood Products Extension at NC State University successfully hosted the 54th Annual Dry Kiln Operator’s Short Course at the Hodges Wood Products Laboratory. This year, 12 attendees from across the country, including those from as far away as Idaho, participated in the workshop.

The four-day program provided comprehensive training in wood drying, covering topics ranging from basic moisture content calculations to advanced kiln control technologies. During the practical laboratory sessions, attendees learned about kiln samples and sections, the proper use of moisture meters, and other aspects of dry kiln operation.

The third day of the workshop focused on practical insights from major kiln companies, including Kiln Direct, Nyle, SII, and A.W. Stiles. Their presentations helped attendees better navigate the various kiln types and their proper operation.

A major highlight of the workshop was the plant tour of Edwards Wood Products in Liberty, North Carolina, on Tuesday afternoon. We extend our thanks to Edwards Wood Products and their team for hosting the tour and supporting the workshop!
