Meet Future Student – Kaya Kusmierczuk

Kaya Kusmierczuk

Hometown:

  • Clinton, NC

What school will you graduate from:

  • North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics

What is your Intended Major:

  • Paper Science and Engineering & Chemical Engineering

Why did you Choose NC State:

  • I really love STEM subjects, and I’ve always wanted to study chemical engineering. When I found out about the dual degree program with chemical engineering and paper science and engineering, I was really interested in this as well. It will allow me to explore sustainability and learn about a subject I had never really considered. I also really like the family feel that CNR has; everyone has been super friendly and welcoming so far, and I can’t wait to meet my new classmates.

What activities did you participate in during high school? What was you favorite and why?

  • I worked as a student lab assistant for the chemistry department at NCSSM during my senior year as my senior leadership/campus work service position.
  • I also worked as a manager at a Dairy Queen store in Clinton during the summers of 2019 and 2020, and also during winter of 2020/2021 while I was on break from school.
  • At NCSSM I was in KEY club (community service organization), FIELD club (hiking/outdoors), Bhangra (Indian dance group), and I was on the varsity softball team for my first season, which was cut short because of COVID.
  • I am also part of different 4-H clubs and am in the girl scouts, where I do lots of community service activities and different workshops. I’ve been in 4-H for 12 years, and through 4-H I have participated in different competitions and expanded my interests.
  • My favorite activity has been 4-H because I am able to do so much through the many clubs I’m in. I did different competitions (public speaking, horse bowl, etc.), workshops, and got to do fun things with the many friends I’ve made.

What are you most excited about as you head to NC State?

  • I am looking forward to exploring my interests and being able to learn about what I love. I’m ready to meet new people and create connections that will help me in my future. I’m also really excited about studying abroad and having research opportunities.
  • Another thing I’m looking forward to is different opportunities and fun activities in the University Scholars program; I was accepted into this program and it sounds very beneficial.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • I am a very outdoorsy person; I love hiking, kayaking, swimming, and overall just exploring nature.
  • Another fun fact is that I am a first generation American. My parents immigrated from Poland, and all of my extended family lives there. I have dual citizenship and visit my family in Poland every 2 years.
