Why did you choose  Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • When applying to NC State I knew I wanted to major in chemical engineering, but it wasn’t until I was researching more into the school, and attending an admitted student’s day, that I got my first look into what PSE was. After learning of the offered dual degree for Chemical Engineering & Paper Science and Engineering, I was intrigued. I then spoke to both Dr. Med Byrd and Mrs. Jennifer Piercy about these opportunities. By learning a little more about the program and speaking with those involved, I got a first-hand look at how supportive the faculty was. I also realized how involved they were in students not only succeeding in classes but in their careers as well. With the supportive faculty, amazing internship opportunities, and high job placement rate, the dual degree with chemical engineering and paper science and engineering was what I wanted to pursue.

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • Having the opportunity to study and learn about something that many people take for granted is one of my favorite things about PSE. Taking such common household items and really understanding the process of how they are produced and processed, is extremely fascinating.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • The student network at NC State is my favorite thing about being a student here. We have great student support at sporting events, we interact and contribute towards our community, and we have an amazing alumni network. All of these opportunities really make the college experience and allow for an amazing time at NC State.

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • My greatest advice to incoming freshmen would be, do not put too much pressure on themselves. I came in as someone who did very well in high school with little effort. It was a rough time when I realized I would not glide through college the way I did through high school. Don’t put too much pressure on themselves to make perfect grades. It’s also essential to find a balance between academics and social life. An easy way to do this would be to get involved in clubs and organizations that peak there interest. By doing these things, the transition to college will be smoother and allow them to get a true college experience.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • Something people are often surprised about is my love of adrenaline activities. When it comes to school work, I am always very organized and follow the rules, but outside of classes and school, I am an extreme adrenaline junkie. I enjoy zip-lining, bungee jumping, and skydiving!

Who has been your favorite staff and/or faculty member?

  • Mrs. Piercy is one of my favorite staff members. She is the Director of Student Recruiting for PSE, and always one of the first people to offer a helping hand. From the first time I spoke with her as a senior in high school to now finishing up my sophomore year in college, her support and reliability have not changed. Mrs. Piercy is always willing to help with what she can, speak with you anytime it’s needed, or just listen if you just need an ear. Having this support on campus has really helped during my first two years of college.
