Impressive Accomplishments from Impressive PSE Women

Our program is devoted to helping students become servant leaders and contributors to our campus community and society.  Here are three wonderful examples of how our PSE Women influence our University.

Megan Yang is the President of the Cultural Exchange Network (CENet), a student organization where we do our best to foster networks and build cultural competency between American and Exchange students through various social, volunteering and educational events. It is crucial for students learn how to be culturally competent as the world becomes more globalized and the most genuine way to build competency is by engaging with other persons. Megan has been with CENet for nearly 5 years and fully supports the efforts and goal of the student organization. She personally enjoys programming events for students (even though it can be stressful) and she has done it in multiple different positions in the past (as a Resident Advisor and Resident Mentor). Getting the opportunity to see students enjoy or take something valuable from an event after putting forth a lot of effort brings Megan joy.

Breonda Snead is the President of the National Pan-Hellenic Council through the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life on campus. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically Black International Greek lettered fraternities and sororities, of which eight are currently active at NC State. She is responsible for making sure that all of these organizations continue to be recognized and stay connected with other entities on campus. She plans and facilitate meetings with an Executive Board comprised of members from these organizations, chapter presidents, and the general body of the Council to ensure that they fulfill their purpose as stated in the Constitution. Additionally she is the figurehead of the Council which means she disseminates information internally and externally on the Council’s behalf. As a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. she has automatically been a member of NPHC since being initiated into her sorority freshman year. She was on the NPHC Executive Board last year and played a vital

role and updating the Council’s Constitution. The work that she did last year allowed her to shadow the previous President, who was also a member of her chapter. The progress the former President helped our Council make inspired Breonda to take on this role as her successor to continue making the collective organization better.  Most recently, Breonda was honored at the Greek Awards being presented with Sorority Woman of the Year.

Allison Hellwig  For the past year, Allison has been the president of the sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was nominated for this position by a committee of peers in this chapter. While this position has been very stressful at times, she has gained invaluable skills and lessons. On a daily basis, Allison makes decisions about the direction the chapter is moving to ensure that we have strong and empowered women who are succeeding academically, building a strong sisterhood, and carrying out our philanthropic initiatives. She manages a chapter of 160 women answering their questions as needed and making sure the chapter is heading in a direction that most agree with. She also manages an 15 member officer board; ensuring that she helps where needed and enables their ideas with any resources that she can provide. She works closely with the House Corporation and Advisory Board of alumnae and also is the primary Kappa Kappa Gamma contact for other organizations on campus. Allison has learned a tremendous amount about how to be an effective leader and how to navigate difficult situations involving people. “As engineers, we focus so much on making smart decisions involving money or technology that I think it is so important for students to also focus on their soft skills to effectively work with and lead others. Sororities and Fraternities give a space for people to work together to do big things.” Most recently, Allison was honored at the Greek Awards being presented with the Outstanding Chapter President award.
