Why did you choose  Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • I wanted to choose a major that wasn’t just about engineering, but about how engineering interacts with other fields. The PSE program is a balance of engineering, project management, economics, business, and sustainable technology. There are so many career opportunities both in and outside the paper industry that come from the program’s transferable skills.

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • By far the thing I love most is the community. It’s a relatively small program with about 200 students and everyone helps each other and hangs out outside the classroom. The PSE faculty are also some of the best. They will go above and beyond to help you succeed.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • I gotta say it’s the community again. NC State may be a huge school with 35,000+ students, yet it feels small at the same time.  I can’t go anywhere with seeing someone that I know. There are so many different organizations where anyone can find their niche and make an impact.

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • Don’t try to be perfect in everything and know your limit. I tried to be involved in everything while trying to maintain straight A’s and it was exhausting. Grind in your classes, but also have fun, make life-long friends, get involved in what you’re passionate about, preserve your mental health, and always strive to be the best version of yourself.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • I studied abroad in Shanghai, China one summer and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. I ate food that I couldn’t pronounce, went to night clubs that were straight out of movies, and gained a new perspective on the Chinese people and how to navigate in foreign environments.

What is our favorite extra-curricular activity?

  • I love anything having to do with music. I love all types of music from R&B, classical, and hip-hop, to jazz, country, and pop. Music just moves me and makes me feel at peace like no-one or anything else does. I like going to jazz clubs, musicals, and concerts. Fun fact, I recently started playing the violin.
