Why did you choose  Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • I was originally looking to come to NC State for Chemical Engineering. I knew that State was the school that I wanted to attend, but I was out-of-state. I happened to end up in the PSE open house information session, where I met Jennifer Piercy. The program seemed to have many opportunities that I did not hear about with Chemical Engineering. In addition, they seemed like a very tight-knit group. I liked the idea of being in a smaller community where my classmates and professors actually knew me within such a large university. The job opportunities and sustainability of the paper industry also intrigued me. At the time, I had no idea what it meant to be in the pulp and paper industry, but I am so happy that I chose to be in this major!!

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • I love the family atmosphere of PSE. I am friends with all of my classmates, and my professors know me as a person instead of just being a student in their class. We are very collaborative. There is no competition when it comes to grades or getting job offers; we all support and celebrate each other’s successes and are always willing to help each other out.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • My favorite thing about NC State is the Wellness and Recreation program. They have so many services and opportunities to help students. I love that I can walk into the gym at any time and see someone I know there. Whenever school gets hard, Carmichael is the place that I can de-stress!

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed! Freshman year is about trying everything out and getting the hang of being a college student. Use this time to explore all of the opportunities you have and by sophomore year you will figure out what you really want to focus on. Also, take advantage of your PSE family! Chances are, you will have at least one PSE student in your class. Being in PSE means that you have an automatic study and homework help group whenever you need it (:

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • I love reading classics! My favorite book of all time is The Fountainhead, and I am currently reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

What is your favorite extra-curricular activity and why?

  • My favorite extra-curricular activity is teaching group fitness at the gym. I teach the 6 AM class, so I tend to have the same participants each week. It is my favorite way to start my day because it’s like working out with a little family. I have gotten to know a lot of my participants personally over the years, and I love hearing how their lives are going and what they’re up to! It brings me so much joy to see them develop friendships with each other as well from attending the same group fitness classes. The sense of community is amazing!
