Why did you choose Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?
I came to NC State intending to get a Chemical Engineering degree and apply it to something sustainable. After PSE reached out to me and told me about their program, I realized that working for one of the most sustainable industries to help build the new bio-economy was the perfect option. I have come to enjoy PSE more with each day that I am here.
What is your favorite thing about PSE?
The inclusive, family-like environment.
What is your favorite thing about NC State?
NC State Dining!
What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?
Get an umbrella that fits in your backpack and a pair of waterproof shoes.
Who has been your favorite professor and/or staff?
Dr. Jameel. Beyond always being enthusiastic about what he teaches,he delivers his material through the lens of the information being utilized by future engineers. The work he assigns mimics problems and assignments I would have in the mill setting and he does not expect scientific precision, rather that, all students, understand why it is the way it is and the methods needed to find the solution.
Who has been your favorite extra-curricular activity?
Sailing with the NC State Sailing Team. Sailing is a fun and soothing break from classwork. When I am on the water, I am no longer thinking about homework, tests or assignments – just what is happening at that moment in the boat and around me. Racing in sailboats is much more complicated than I initially thought, requiring practiced boat handling skills that are synchronized with your teammate, a deep understanding of tactics, and the ability to adapt to the fluid environment created by the air and the water. Building skills with my teammates in competitive settings has been thrilling and rewarding, and the friendships borne from weekend trips to regattas around the southeast coast are what tie us together.
