Internship Affirms… I love Paper
Meet Zack Carson, a paper science and engineering student from Ohio. Zack was able to start his internship with Evergreen Packaging this summer right on schedule even during the uncertainty of Covid-19. Enjoy his thoughts.
This Evergreen mill, located in Canton, North Carolina, made a commitment to the the interns in providing a learning experience I have come to greatly appreciate. Being a student who just finished freshman year posed a few concerns on my end about how efficient I would be in a mill environment with only one year of classes under my belt. However, my supervisor took me under his wing and got me started on meaningful projects right away.
Problem Solved and Money Saved
I worked in the chemical recovery area, which, in my opinion, is where all the fun exists! I started on projects which included: tall oil as a by-product and profitability, root causes of ringing and balling in kilns, and assisting in the creation of ODR (Operator Driven Reliability) routes. The most exciting moment was when I was able to root out an issue in the Tall Oil area and come up with a solution which will drive savings of at least $10,000 per month. My internship with Evergreen Packaging has affirmed my aspirations in the paper manufacturing industry. I could not have had a better experience without everyone I have who mentored and taught me this summer.
