Why did you choose Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life until I met Ms. Alex Loflin, who, when I explained everything I wanted for my future, offered me two options. PSE or Material Science. But she also mentioned PSE held a summer camp to which I attended and immediately fell in love with the program. I chose it because it made my vision for my future possible. It is full of sustainability, ingenuity and fun.

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • The family feel. NC State is a big university and yet my fellow PSE members have my back. They have become the best friends I have ever had (and that includes the faculty).

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • The amount of opportunities that are given to every student. NC State is filled with opportunities to create and learn whatever you desire. Want to make something? Go to the makers’ space. Want to learn about a subject? Go to any library. Want to meet people? Join a club or go to events (and man, there is a variety of those). There is so much to think and do!

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • Don’t worry. People always worry about finding “their people” but let me tell you something, as long as you make yourself available, your people will find you. The campus is huge and filled to the brim, trust me you are going to find and meet all kinds of people.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • I actually grew up in Costa Rica in a rescue center for wildlife. Its name is the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center, and my entire childhood was devoted to rehabilitating and rescuing animals.

What is your favorite extra-curricular activity?

  • I absolutely love volleyball, it has been my passion since I was little. I love the team spirit and the fact that you have to rely on others to be able to win the game. It is literally impossible to win by yourself! It also makes you want to improve yourself so that you can support the people around you on the court.
