Meet Future Student – Max Gibbs

Max Gibbs

Hometown:

  • Greenville, NC

What school will you graduate from:

  • Christ Covenant School

What is your Intended Major:

  • Paper Science and Engineering & Chemical Engineering

Why did you Choose NC State:

  • I have been interested in studying engineering since I entered high school. Applying complicated mathematical and scientific studies into the real world is fascinating to me. With the programs that NC State offers, I will not only be able to use my aforementioned studies to impact the environment, but also experiment with a subject that I am passionate about.

What activities did you participate in during high school? What was you favorite and why?

  • I have participated in both high school and club swim teams throughout all four years of high school. My junior year, we placed 1st in our state competition for our division in one of the relays. I also volunteered at a local hospital in the summer of 2019, and currently work as a lifeguard at a local country club. My favorite activity is swimming because it is a very different sport that provides a unique atmosphere both as an individual and as a team. It allows you to focus on making yourself better while also impacting the group in a positive way.

What are you most excited about as you head to NC State?

  • I am excited to go to college because it will be a completely different lifestyle than high school. Growing up in the same town for 18 years and attending a small school , I became very used to the opportunities that Greenville had to offer. However, I knew that I needed a change. By going to NC State, I hope to gain independence and provide for myself, while also being fairly close to family.

What are you most nervous about as you head to NC State?

  • Even though living on my own is really exciting and new to me, it brings me a lot of worries too. Moving to a college away from my family is going to be tough, but I’m excited for the journey though.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • Am interesting fact about me is that I play the piano. I have been taking lessons for about 12 years. My primary interest is with classical pieces but I like to experiment with other genres.

What are you going to miss from home?

  • I am really going to miss my family. We are all very close and we like to travel and do other things together. I have two sisters, an older one and a younger one, and we like goofing off and having a great time together.

What is your favorite quote?

  • “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either learn from it, or run from it.” Rafiki, from The Lion King
