The Most Congenial Senior Award goes to…

Standing at a proud 6 foot 3 inches, the 2023 Most Congenial Senior Award goes to Mr. Benjamin Young! Throughout his four years in Paper Science and Engineering, Ben never failed to brighten someone’s day with his humor. Ben has a servant’s heart and works diligently in all his endeavors. The Most Congenial Senior Award is an annual award given to a member of the graduating class by student vote. This senior exudes kindness and contributes to the welcoming environment students and faculty know and love.

A Genuine Friend to His Peers

Ben was recommended to the Paper Science and Engineering program by an alumnus from his hometown in Richmond, Virginia. During his four years at NC State, Ben has amassed over a year’s worth of professional work experience. In the summer and fall of 2020, Ben worked as a Pulp Mill Process Engineer Co-op at WestRock’s Hopewell, Virginia location. The following summer, Ben worked in an explosives research lab with Northrop Grumman Aerospace and Defense Agency. In 2022, Ben returned to the Pulp Mill at WestRock’s Cottonton, Alabama location. Ben is an active member in both TAPPI and AICHE student chapters. Additionally, he participated in several intramural sports throughout his college tenure. Outside of class, Ben enjoys serving on the Providence college ministry team and working on his truck. Mr. Young is grateful for the networking connections and job opportunities available within Paper Science and Engineering at NC State. In all his endeavors, Ben is described by his peers as someone who shows up with a smile, puts his best foot forward, and respects others. His passion for learning brings out the best in students and faculty alike. The lighthearted energy he brings uplifts the spirits of those surrounding him. Ben is a hardworking, service oriented individual whose joy and laughter will be missed by the program.

Work Hard and Enjoy Doing Life….

This December, Ben will graduate with dual degrees in Paper Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Ben will spend his upcoming summer traveling through South Asia. In the future, Ben hopes to work abroad and explore more of what this world has to offer. In a final address to his peers, Ben offered encouragement by stating, “Work hard and enjoy doing life with the people around you.”

Ben’s fellow graduates were not surprised by the award and a few added these comments

“He brightens my day with his lighthearted jokes in and out of the classroom! He really brings out class together and makes everyone feel acknowledged.”

“He is sure to make everyone in the classroom feel welcomed. He always has a smile on his face and is kind to anyone he comes across. He brings a lighthearted energy to the paper science community. I really believe he brings out the best in anyone he talks with! He undoubtedly deserved this award.”
