2024 Paper Industry Career Fair

by: Sara Gregory ’27
On August 29, 2024, the Paper Science & Engineering program held its annual Career Fair. We had a very successful turnout this year with a total of 38 companies and over 200 students attending. A special thanks goes to Shannon Lora, Brittany Hayes, and Sami Anthony ’25 for their hard work and dedication in making the career fair possible. We also wanted to extend our thanks to the participating companies and sponsors, Clearwater Paper, Packaging Corporation of America and International Paper for their support. Following the traditional alumni group photo, we held our infamous raffle, where Nathan Combs and our recent May 2023 graduate, Brianna Bui, won an assortment of NC State merchandise!

At this year’s career fair, I volunteered to assist with various tasks, including setup, registration, and teardown. I worked alongside Brittany Hayes and Sami Anthony to arrange tables and set up company booths in the ballroom. This hands-on involvement was a fantastic opportunity for me to start networking and meet industry professionals. Once setup was complete, my peers and I began filing in to speak to the company representatives. After making a few rounds and engaging with several companies, I took on a shift at the registration desk, where I distributed name tags to students from not only paper science & engineering but also chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines. Throughout the day, I spoke with several companies including Smurfit Westrock, Procter & Gamble, Georgia-Pacific, Sylvamo, and more. As a second-year student, I was eager to explore potential opportunities and gain insight into the industry. Each company I spoke with provided valuable information about their work culture, career paths, and the qualifications they seek in candidates. I was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and willingness of the recruiters to share their experiences and answer my questions.

As the day came to a close, I helped with the tear-down process, assisting in packing up materials and ensuring that the ballroom was left in good condition. Reflecting on the event, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The fair not only provided a platform for students to connect with potential employers, but also a chance to engage with the broader paper science & engineering community.
I look forward to applying the knowledge and contacts gained from this year’s career fair as I continue my studies and prepare for future career opportunities. The event was a testament to the vibrant and supportive nature of our field, and I am excited for the prospects that lie ahead.
