Trailblazer 2025–Follow the Trail

On Saturday, April 12, the College of Natural Resources at NC State University hosted its annual Trailblazer event, dedicated to recognizing and thanking the generous donors who help make student success possible.
Donors had a chance to connect directly with students from across the College of Natural Resources. Upon arrival, guests were welcomed with a variety of food and invited to visit tables hosted by student organizations and academic programs. Tables included Student Life, TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry), Forestry Club, the James Buzzard Leadership Development Program, and others representing the breadth of the college’s offerings.
As donors moved along the “trail”, they engaged in conversations with students, learned about campus life and academic experiences, and received stamps on their Trailblazer cards. Once their cards were completed, donors could enter them into a drawing for a prize at the end of the event.
Noah Crowder, who represented the James Buzzard Leadership Development Program, shared his thoughts on the experience:
“Trailblazer was an incredible opportunity to connect with the people who make college possible…for many students. I really enjoyed representing both the Paper Science program and the James Buzzard Leadership Development program—it’s something I’m proud to be a part of.”
Halfway through the afternoon, attendees gathered to hear remarks from Dean Myron Floyd and student speaker, Ivy Cage, who reflected on her journey through the College of Natural Resources as a Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management student. She spoke about how scholarships have opened doors for study abroad, leadership roles, and hands-on learning that have defined her college experience.
The event also featured interactive elements such as a custom T-shirt station, a photo booth, and an ice cream bar. Students, faculty, and donors got a chance to pose with props in the photo booth to remember the day.
Paper Science sophomore, Laiken Edwards greatly enjoyed the event and photo booth. “It was great to talk with industry professionals and alumni who care about our future,” she said. “Having the chance to share our work and hear their perspectives was really rewarding.”
The Trailblazer event continues to serve as a meaningful tradition within the College of Natural Resources, strengthening the bond between students and the donors who help shape their futures.
