From May 4 to 7, 2025, Minneapolis, Minnesota, hosted TAPPICon 2025, a landmark event marking the 110th anniversary of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI). This year’s conference expanded its scope to encompass a broader range of industry segments, including pulping, nonwovens, and biobased products, alongside traditional focuses on paper, tissue, and sustainability. The event had attendees from all over the world, providing a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and celebration of industry achievements.
This year, I had the incredible opportunity to attend TAPPICon 2025 alongside, fellow PSE students, Sami Anthony, who just graduated, and Abby Hickman. We had the opportunity to attend the conference, connect with alumni, and participate in several enriching meetings and events, each of which contributed to an unforgettable experience.
A standout moment was the 110th Anniversary Awards Gala. This elegant evening celebrated the achievements of individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the pulp and paper industry. NC State professor, Dr. Lucian Lucia, was one of the recipients of the prestigious awards. He was recognized for his research and innovation throughout his career.

The Women in Industry annual meeting featured a compelling talk by Lu Athnos of ABB, who shared her journey in the industry, starting from her studies in China, to now being a regional sales manager. Her message emphasized overcoming fear and embracing opportunities, inspiring attendees to pursue their professional goals with confidence and determination.
The Young Professional annual meeting provided a platform for emerging leaders to discuss the future of the industry. Topics included the integration of artificial intelligence in manufacturing processes and strategies for navigating the early years of one’s career in the pulp and paper sector. These discussions highlighted the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in a rapidly evolving industry.
The exhibition floor at TAPPICon 2025 was a hub of innovation, showcasing over 100 suppliers offering cutting-edge solutions across various sectors. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with exhibitors, explore new technologies, and establish valuable connections. A notable highlight was ABB’s All Compatible Experience roadshow, which demonstrated their comprehensive drives portfolio and automation products, offering insights into the future of industrial automation.

TAPPICon 2025 was not just a celebration of the past, but a clear look into the future of the pulp and paper industry. With its diverse array of sessions, discussions, and networking opportunities, the event underscored the industry’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the professional growth of its members. As we move forward, the insights and connections made at TAPPICon will continue to shape the industry’s trajectory, empowering the next generation of leaders to drive change and tackle emerging challenges. Events like TAPPICon are crucial in ensuring that the industry remains resilient, dynamic, and ready to embrace the opportunities of tomorrow.
