FB Graduate Student Spotlight: Jorge Franco Ocampo

Meet Jorge Humberto Franco Ocampo, one of the new Forest Biomaterials students who joined our Graduate program this semester!

Where are you from? Can you tell us something about your hometown?

I’m from Colombia. My hometown is Cali, the third biggest city in Colombia. People from Colombia and Cali are very friendly and kind. Also, Cali is known as “the capital of music salsa,” and every year in December, a festival of salsa called “Salsodromo” is performed, which is so nice! However, I have yet to learn to dance salsa.

What did you major in and when/where did you complete your previous degree(s)?

I have a degree in Chemistry from the Universidad Santiago de Cali and I did a minor in Chemical Technology in the Universidad del Valle.

Which program did you apply for at the Department of Forest Biomaterials? Why?

I applied for the Ph.D. program because I was looking for a program that would boost me in my area of work, and the doctoral program meets my professional expectations.

Who is your advisor? What will your research focus be?

Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez. My research project involves the use of non-wood to create packaging materials that meet the quality specifications of conventional packaging and that are technically and economically viable to produce.

Why are you interested in that area?

I used to work in the pulp and paper industry and I understand the challenges that the industry faces in terms of the resource availability and efficiency of its use. As a result, my research area could have an impact on the future of the industry and the use of agricultural waste to meet consumer needs.

What is the impact that you are hoping to have in the realm of sustainability?

The main objective of the research project is to take advantage of materials that by today’s standards are considered waste in order to produce biodegradable materials such as paper. This fits perfectly with the principles of sustainability.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time, e.g. hobbies, community service, etc?

Attending sporting events such as football or basketball games. I also enjoy cooking, travelling and spending time with my family and friends.
