Why did you choose Paper Science and Engineering (PSE)?

  • I was originally just going to do the chemical engineering program, but after hearing about all of the opportunities for hands-on-work experience in the paper industry and meeting all of the staff, I was hooked on paper.

What is your favorite thing about Paper Science and Engineering?

  • All of the people involved in the program and the opportunities for networking and professional development.

What is your favorite thing about NC State?

  • All of the opportunities; both in and out of the classroom. In my first year at NC State, I was able to pursue every academic outlet I could think of, as well as having access to a myriad of other programs.

What advice would you offer to an incoming freshman?

  • Don’t be afraid of taking it easy your freshmen year. Education is a journey, not a race; and everybody moves at different speeds. Also, learning isn’t just limited to what happens in the classroom, either. Take meaningful time to learn who you are, what you like to do, and how to be an adult.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

  • As of Fall 2021, I have moved 14 times and will have been to 30 states!

Who has been your favorite professor?

  • In paper, Dr. Byrd, outside of paper, either Dr. Arkady Kheyfets or Dr. Jason Bivins.

What has been your greatest challenge thus far?

  • Trying to manage a full load of classes, a social life, and a healthy eating, sleeping and exercising schedule.

What is your favorite extra-curricular activity?

  • Rock climbing! I started going in the spring of 2021 semester with one of my friends from paper every Sunday, and quickly realized that it was my favorite part of the week and started going more often. I love how it combines both physical and mental challenges– it’s almost like a high stakes physical game of chess that’s you vs. nature. Climbing encompasses all my attention while I’m doing it, and it makes it easy to forget about some of the stresses of class, and I get to exercise and meet some really cool people while doing it.
